Step by step solutions are provided under the Solutions tab. You will learn the material more thoroughly if you complete the questions before checking the answers.

1.
a.
Draw the letter M below so that it is half the size of the original.

b.
Explain how the original M and its image are proportional.

1.
a.
Draw the letter M below so that it is half the size of the original.

b.
Explain how the original M and its image are proportional.

a.
Step 1: Find the middle of the M. The hash marks are the midpoints of the two vertical lines. The dot is placed in the middle of the hash marks.

Step 2: Find the distance from the middle of the M to each key point.

Step 3: Multiply each length by the scale factor of 0.5.

Sides of (vertical lines):
5 cm Ã— 0.5 = 2.5 cm

Middle lines of the M:
1.6 cm × 0.5 = 0.8 cm

Step 4: Place four dots 2.5 cm from the centre toward each diagonal vertex on the top and bottom of the M. Then place one dot 0 . 8   cm  from the centre toward the remaining vertex. You may use lines, as demonstrated below, but then erase them when you have finished drawing the dilation.

Step 5: Connect each key point (vertex) to form the dilated M. The green M is the reduction.

b.
Every line segment in the image that was drawn is half the length of the original M.
