Lines of Reflection



If the original object is reflected in a line, the line is called a line of reflection. This is shown as the red line in the picture to the left.

An object can be reflected in any line on a Cartesian plane (grid). The two most common lines of reflection are the x-axis and y-axis.










In reflections, the image always keeps the same size and shape as the original object or shape. However, the image is reversed or flipped, like objects you see in a mirror. Each point on the original object and the corresponding point on its image are the same distance from the line of reflection.

Point A and its image, A', are both 1 unit from the reflection line. Point B and its image, B' , are both 2 units from the line of reflection.
