Unit A: Geometry

Chapter 2: Transformations

Identifying Transformations

Figure A is a heptagon in the shape of an arrow. A transformation has been applied to produce each image A'.

a.
Explain which type of transformation (translation and/or reflection) has been applied to the heptagon A.

This transformation could be a reflection in the y-axis since both shapes are the same size. The tip of the arrow in heptagon A and the tip of the arrow in heptagon A' are both 5 units from the y-axis. Also, all other points are equal distance from the y-axis.

The transformation could also be a translation since the image is the same size as the original heptagon and has the same orientation (pointing up). The image moved horizontally 10 units to the right of the original arrow.

b.
What type of transformation has been applied to the heptagon A in the diagram?

The transformation is a translation since the image is the same size as the original and has the same orientation (pointing up). The image moved horizontally 9 units to the right of the original arrow. The transformation cannot be a reflection since the key points are not the same distance from the y-axis.
