Chapter 2: Transformations


Owls have the unique ability to rotate their head close to 360°.


A quarter turn to the left is the same as rotating 90° counterclockwise.


An snowy owl can rotate its head a half turn (180°) without damaging the blood vessels in its neck!



The last transformation to be studied in this chapter is called a rotation. A rotation is the movement of a shape or object about a fixed point. The pinwheel in the picture on the right rotates about the white centre point.


By the end of this lesson, you will be able to

  • identify a single rotation that was performed, given the original 2D shape or 3D object and its image
  • draw the image of a 2D shape that results from a given rotation
  • draw the image of a 2D shape that results from a combination of two separate transformations
