Cosine Law

• The cosine law can be used to calculate unknown side lengths and angles in an oblique triangle.

• To use cosine law, your calculator must be in degree mode.

• To find the cosine of an angle, press on your calculator.

• To find an angle, press on your calculator.

• The cosine law can be used to find a side length given an angle between two sides. The length of a side of a triangle can be calculated using

Choosing the Cosine Law or the Sine Law

• The sine law should be used to find a side length or angle whenever possible.

• The cosine law should only be used if
• a given angle is located between two known sides.
