Unit B: Measurement

Different measuring tools have different degrees of accuracy. When diamonds are catalogued, the measurements must be accurate. Since diamonds and other gemstones are small, a measuring tool, such as a calliper, uses very small increments to ensure that the measurement is as accurate as possible.

When measuring the length of a street to determine the amount of concrete required to resurface a road, a measuring tool, such as a trundle wheel, would be used. A trundle wheel does not measure as accurately as a calliper however, measuring the length of a road does not require the same degree of accuracy as measuring the size of a diamond.

Every measuring tool has some unique qualities that make it appropriate or inappropriate for a measuring task. In this lesson, choosing the correct type of measuring tool for a given situation will be discussed.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to

  • describe general limitations of measuring instruments
