Unit B: Measurement


Descriptions of different measuring tools are listed below.

Tool Description
measuring spoons

  • measures up to 15 mL or 1 tablespoon
  • imperial and metric units (equivalent amounts) on the handle of most
  • example: used for measuring baking powder or oil in a recipe
liquid measuring cup

  • measures from 50 mL or 1 4 cup to 500 mL or 2 cups
  • precision to the nearest 50 mL or  1 4 cup
  • measures liquid;
  • generally made of transparent glass or plastic with markers in both metric and imperial units
  • example: used for measuring milk for a recipe
solid measuring cup
(can also be used for liquids)

  • measures solids; in various sizes
  • generally with both metric and imperial units on the handle
  • much more accurate measuring volume than a liquid measuring cup
  • example: used for measuring flour or oil for a recipe
graduated cylinder

  • used in science laboratories
  • starts at 10 mL and can be as large as 2 L
  • precision to the nearest 0.5 mL
  • example: used for measuring the volume of an acid in an experiment
beaker

  • used in science laboratories
  • starts at 10 mL and can be as large as 2 L
  • precision to the nearest 20 mL
  • example: used for measuring the volume of distilled water in an experiment

  • used in kitchens to measure masses or weights of ingredients
  • used in science laboratories to measure the mass of chemicals
  • precision to the nearest gram or 1 32 ounce
  • measures in grams or ounces
  • example: used for measuring 221 grams of walnuts
infant scale


grocery scale

  • an infant scale is used in medical offices to weigh babies under 9 kg or 20 pounds















  • a grocery scale is used in supermarkets to measure produce
  • precision to the nearest 50 g or 2 ounces
  • example: used for measuring 1 pound of bananas
multi-purpose scale

  • used to measure weights of 5 lb or 2 kg to 300 lb or 135 kg
  • precision to the nearest 0.2 lb or 0.1 kg
  • example: used for weighing a dog on a bathroom scale
