Unit D: Graphing

Direct Variation

At the top of every ski run in Banff is a sign with a symbol.

A green circle indicates runs with a slope gradient of less than 25% and is intended for novice skiers and snowboarders.
A blue square indicates runs with a slope gradient of 25% to 40% and is intended for intermediate skiers and snowboarders.
A black diamond indicates runs with a slope gradient of over 40% and is intended for expert skiers and snowboarders.

In this lesson, the slope, or the steepness of a line, will be determined for a linear relation.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to

  • identify and describe the characteristics of linear relations represented by graphs, tables of values, number patterns, or equations
  • relate slope, or rate of change, to a linear relation
  • sketch the graph for a given table of values
  • create a table of values for a given equation of a linear relation
  • create a graph to represent a set of data
  • write an equation for a direct variation relationship
  • solve a problem that requires interpolation or extrapolation of data
