Using Graphs to Estimate Values
Graphs can be used to estimate values. Interpolation uses known data points to find values in between the given points. For the graph below, use interpolation to estimate a measurement in centimetres if the length given in 3 inches.

To estimate the length of 3 inches in centimetres, start at 3 inches on the x-axis and draw a vertical line up to the line graph.
Once this is complete, draw a horizontal line to the y-axis.
Therefore, 3 inches is approximately 7.5 cm using the method of interpolation.

Once this is complete, draw a horizontal line to the y-axis.

Therefore, 3 inches is approximately 7.5 cm using the method of interpolation.
The same graph can also be used to estimate the length in inches of a given measurement in centimetres.
Given the graph, convert 18 cm to inches.

To estimate the length of 18 cm in inches, start at 18 cm on the y-axis and draw a horizontal line to the line graph.
Once this is complete, draw a vertical line to the x-axis.
Therefore, 18 cm is approximately 7.1 inches (just above 7 in) using the method of interpolation.

Once this is complete, draw a vertical line to the x-axis.

Therefore, 18 cm is approximately 7.1 inches (just above 7 in) using the method of interpolation.
