Chapter 1: Statistics
Mode
The third most commonly used measure of central tendency is the mode. The mode is the value that appears most often in a set of data.
To determine the mode,
- arrange the data in ascending order
- count the frequency of each number to see which number appears the most
Eleven starting salaries for a certain company are listed in the table. Calculate the mode starting salary for new employees.
The values are already arranged in ascending order. Look for the value that appears the most often.
All the values appear only once in the table except for $35 000. Therefore, the mode starting salary at the company is $35 000. If no value appears more than once in a data set, there is no mode. If two or more values appear more than once, the mode is all of the values that occur the most frequently.

All the values appear only once in the table except for $35 000. Therefore, the mode starting salary at the company is $35 000. If no value appears more than once in a data set, there is no mode. If two or more values appear more than once, the mode is all of the values that occur the most frequently.
Find the mode for each set of data.
- 11, 2, 4, 15, 8, and 5
- 4, 2, 4, 4, 8, 2, 5, 8, 2, 1, and 5
- Arrange the data in ascending order.
2, 4, 5, 8, 11, 15
All the values only appear once, so there is no mode in the set of data.
- Arrange the data in ascending order.
1, 2, 2, 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 8, 8
The values of 2, and 4 each appear three times in the set of data. Therefore, there are two modes in the set of data. These are 2 and 4.
