F. Radicals with Variables

It's time to combine the Exponent Rules with the Radical Rules.

When a variable appears in a radicand, restrictions may need to be placed on the variable.

Example 2

= non-real answer or does not exist in the set of Real Numbers.

Within the Real Number system, the value of cannot be determined. As such we say, is non-real or that does not exist within the set of Real Numbers.

Example 3

= non-real answer or does not exist in the set of Real Numbers.

For square roots, the variable in the radicand must always be restricted such that the value of the radicand is zero or positive.

The mathematical way to do this is to state all restrictions on the variable with the answer at the end of the simplification. However, it must be noted before any simplification is done.
