Unit 5: Proportional Reasoning
Unit 5: Proportional Reasoning
Many topics in the high school math curriculum require the use of proportional reasoning. On many occasions when you have used fractions, decimals, scales, measurements, and algebra, you have also used proportional reasoning, perhaps without even realizing. Proportional reasoning is used to help solve problems involving speed, acceleration, price comparisons, scale drawings of a room, and mapping, to name a few. Proportional reasoning allows you to make comparisons when the ratio between two quantities is known.
Lesson 5.1: Rates and Unit Rates
Whether it is a rate of speed or a dosage of medicine based on the weight of the patient, the mathematical processes are similar for understanding and solving problems.
In Lesson 5.1 you will explore rates and unit rates and the roles they play in many daily activities.
In Lesson 5.1, you will
- interpret and compare rates and unit rates
- convert the units of a rate
- use graphs to represent rates
- interpret the slope of a line as a rate
- understand and explain the solutions to problems involving rates
