Scale Factor and Area
Completion requirements
To find the area of the shape resulting from an enlargement or a reduction, multiply the area of the original shape by the scale factor squared.
You can also use the areas of two similar shapes to determine the scale factor.
Example 1
A rectangle with area 28 cm2 was reduced to a rectangle with area 16 cm2. What was the scale factor used?
The scale factor used in the reduction was approximately 0.76.
