D. 2 Ways to Use Division
To convert from a measurement with one part to a measurement with multiple parts, determine the number of larger units that fit within the given measurement and then determine how many of the smaller units are left over.
Conversion Strategy 1: Use Division and then Subtraction
Example 2 |
Convert 91 inches into feet and inches. There are 12 inches in a foot so divide 91 by 12 to determine the number of feet in 91 inches.
There are 7 full feet in 91 inches. Now, convert 7 feet to inches and subtract from 91 to determine the number of inches left over.
Of the 91 inches, 84 inches make up the 7 feet.
So 91 inches is equivalent to 7 feet 7 inches. |
Conversion Strategy 2: Use Division with a Remainder
Example 3 |
Convert 66 to pounds and ounces There are 16 ounces in a pound, so divide by 16 and state the remainder.
This means there are 4 whole pounds with 2 ounces left over in 66 ounces, So, 66 oz = 4 lbs 2 oz. |
