Glossary

Unit 1: Measurement

Calliper A device for measuring external or internal dimensions, as well as depth.

Conversion Ratio A ratio equal to 1 that can be used to convert between different units.

Imperial System A system of measurement based on British units. (pound (lb), foot (ft), gallon (gal), etc.)

Metric System A system of measurement where units are related by powers of 10. The SI system is the most common metric system. (metre (m), gram (g), litre (L), etc.)

Micrometer A device for measuring small objects precisely.

Proportion A statement of equality between two ratios.

Ratio A relationship between two quantities. A ratio is often expressed as a fraction.

Referent An object of known size that can be used to estimate measurements.

Rounding Replacing one value with another, simpler value that is approximately equal to the original.

SI (International System of Units) A system of measurement where units are related by powers of 10. The SI system is often referred to as the metric system. (metres (m), grams (g), litres (L), etc.)

Vernier Scale A sliding scale that is used to indicate fractional divisions of a larger scale.
