Lesson 2.1: Surface Area of 3-D Objects

Unit 2: Surface Area and Volume
Packages sent by land or air often have to resist enormous amounts of wear and tear. Usually, the boxes are rectangular prisms wrapped with sturdy, brown postal paper. The cost of package delivery depends on where it is going and how heavy it is. Knowing the amount of packaging required and the shape of packages that optimize volume are important considerations for companies that ship a lot of goods.

The objects all around you are three-dimensional (3-D), so it is important to understand the relationship between three-dimensional objects and two-dimensional shapes.
In Lesson 2.1, you will learn how to determine
- the surface area of right prisms, right cylinders, right cones, right pyramids, and spheres
- the missing dimension of a right prism, right cylinder, right cone, right pyramid, or sphere when given the surface area and the other dimensions
