Key Lesson Marker

In general, the volume formula for any right pyramid is

B is the area of the base of the pyramid
h is the height

Example 1

What are the volumes, to the nearest cubic centimetre, of the right rectangular pyramid and
the related right rectangular prism?

Step 1: Assign variables to the given values.
Let l = 8 cm, h = 7.5 cm, and w = 6.5 cm

Step 2: Substitute the given values into the formulas for the volume of a right rectangular pyramid and the volume of a right rectangular prism.

Step 3: State the answer with the appropriate units.
The volume of the right rectangular pyramid is 130 cm3 and the volume of the right rectangular prism is 390 cm3.

For an example of how to determine the volume of a right square pyramid see p. 83 of Mathematics 10.
