Adding with Algebra Tiles

Expressions can be added by combining two or more groups of algebra tiles.

Example 1

Add x2+3x-1+3x2-x-4 using algebra tiles.

Represent the two expressions using algebra tiles.

Place like-size tiles into groups.

A positive and a negative tile of the same size add to zero, so the pair can be removed.

Use the remaining tiles to determine the sum of the original two expressions.

x2+3x-1+(3x2-x-4)=4x2+2x-5
