Glossary
Unit 6: Relations and Functions
Cartesian Coordinate System a system for representing points on a plane in relation to a horizontal
x-axis and a vertical
y-axis whose point of intersection is labelled (0,0). This point of intersection is referred to as the origin.
Continuous Data attached, uninterrupted values that are connected by a line when graphed. Continuous data is measured, not counted.
Data a collection of information
Dependent Variable a variable whose value is determined by another (independent) variable
Discrete Data distinct values that are not connected by a line when graphed. Discrete data is counted, not measured.
Domain the set of all possible input values (
x-values) of a relation
Extrapolation predictions about data values above or below given data
Function for every unique input value, there is a single unique output value
Graph a visual depiction of the relationship between two variables
Independent Variable a variable whose value is not determined by another variable
Interpolation predictions about data values between given data
Interval Notation a symbolic way of representing a particular interval of values using specific brackets to denote inclusion or exclusion of the interval endpoints. Domain and range are often represented using interval notation.
Linear Relation a relation whose graph is a straight line
Range the set of all possible output values (
y-values) of a relation
Rate of Change how one quantity changes relative to another quantity
Relation a set of ordered pairs that can be represented in many ways
Scale the range of values noted on each axis, where the length of each axis is divided into identically-sized intervals
Set a collection of distinct objects, where each object is referred to as an element of the set
Set-builder Notation a symbolic way of representing a set of values by describing the characteristics of that set. Domain and range are often represented using set-builder notation.
Slope the ratio of the vertical change to the horizontal change of a line or line segment
Vertical Line Test a visual way to determine if a relation is a function or not
