Unit 8: Systems of Linear Equations

When running a simple business, it is important to know how much money has been taken in (revenue) and how much money has been spent (expenses). The break-even point is the instant when the revenue and the expenses are equal. Knowing the break-even point allows business owners to make decisions about their businesses.

It is possible to model the revenue and expenses of some businesses using two linear equations. From the two equations, a break-even point can be determined.

Unit 8 Calculator Guide is here.

Before making a purchase, it is common for people to compare the cost of several similar goods or services. Imagine two paintball companies with different equipment rental and paintball prices. How could you compare the total cost of a paintball experience when the individual component prices are different for each company?

In Unit 7, you saw that linear relations could be represented and interpreted using both graphs and equations. In this lesson, you will explore these ideas using more than one relation at a time.

In Lesson 8.1, you will learn about

  • graphing systems of linear equations

  • solving systems of linear equations

  • the number of solutions for a system of linear equations
