ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

Self-Check Quizzes

Self-check quizzes occur throughout the course to help you review the course material and to reinforce important course content.  They are untimed, and open-book, which means you can (and should) use your course materials to help you answer the questions.  The correct answers will be displayed to you once you have completed the quiz.  All self-check quizzes are required and must be completed.  You are asked to complete each self-check quiz successfully before moving forward in the course.  If you miss more than two questions, attempt the quiz again.  Most self-check quizzes allow you three attempts.  You must complete all self-check quizzes before you will be allowed to write your Midterm Quiz or your Final Exam.

Quizzes

There are a few quizzes in the course that are not self-assessments.  These quizzes are for marks, and each quiz has a minimum required mark that you must meet before proceeding in the course.  Read and answer the questions carefully.  Use your course materials and texts to help you succeed on these quizzes.  If you do not do well on your first attempt, read the feedback you receive and try the quiz again.  Typically you are allowed two attempts on these quizzes for marks.

Exams

This course has two major exams

  • Exam 1 and Exam 2 are designed to give you a nearly identical experience to writing the provincial diploma exam.  The provincial diploma exam is made up of two different exams designed to be written on two different days.  Your exams for this course are structured in the same way.

  • Exam 1 is the Reading Comprehension exam.  It is worth 15% of your overall course mark.

  • Exam 2 is the Written Response exam.  It is also worth 15% of your overall course mark.

  • If you earn less than 40% on either exam, you will be required to write an appeal exam.  Please contact your teacher if you have any questions.

Both of these exams will require supervision.  You should arrange to write your in-course exams at your local school. When the time comes to write your in-course exams, phone your teacher, who can ensure someone from your school is listed as your exam supervisor, and if so, your exams can be emailed directly to that person.  If your school is not in session when you wish to write your in-course exams, or if for some other reason you wish to write your exams elsewhere, you must arrange for a certified teacher or librarian to supervise your exams in your community.  It is important to make these arrangements well before you intend to write your exams to avoid negative consequences.  Contact your lead teacher if you would like assistance with this process.

Diploma Exam

All English 30-2 students throughout the province are also required to write an English 30-2 diploma exam, through Alberta Education, in order to obtain credits and graduate.  This course will help prepare you for this important exam, and your teacher will assist you with any questions you have regarding how and when to register for that exam.  Your provincial diploma exam will be worth 30% of your mark in this course.  This course will provide you with information and strategies that will help you succeed on this important exam.  In addition, this Alberta Education website will provide you helpful information about the exam schedule, testing locations, sample exams, etc.
