HOW DOES INTEGRITY, OR LACK OF INTEGRITY, AFFECT ONE’S ABILITY TO LIVE WELL?
What importance do characteristics like honesty, honour, decency, or morality play in our lives? Can we live well without them? If we tell white lies, does that impact our ability to live well? If we show kindness or fairness, even if we never get credit for doing so, does that somehow affect the quality of our lives? What if we live a life of integrity . . . most of the time. . . but we have a moment of weakness and commit an immoral or dishonourable act? Is one act enough to shatter a good life? Is one good act enough to rebuild it? A powerful businessman named W. Clement Stone once described integrity this way: “Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity.” Take a moment to listen to the powerful words of the great poet and leader, Maya Angelou, as she shares what she believed it means to “live right.”
