Visual Literacy:  Unlocking the Mysteries of Visual Images

Images are one type of text.  Although images generally don’t include words, they use various tools to communicate a message and have an impact on the audience, just as any other text would.  Take this short three-minute video by Everynone entitled “Words,” for example.  No words are displayed, yet what words come to mind as you view the images? 



You will encounter two major categories of visual images on your diploma exam as well as in every aspect of your life:

• commercial images, which are for monetary gain or business purposes
• artistic images, which are for personal enjoyment or artistic expression.
