The "Think" and "Feel" of Poetry

Much like music, poetry is meant to be experienced and felt.  Both are intended to move us emotionally.  Any close reading we do to examine poetic techniques will deepen our emotional experience and allow us to understand the poem’s message.   Tools in this section of the unit will help you decipher poetry in course assignments and on the diploma exam.

When approaching poetry, always think about the “feel” of a poem first—the mood and the emotion that impacts the reader.  Then, consider the “think” of the poem—what kinds of techniques does the poet use in order to bring out certain emotions in the reader?
