Unit 2, Section 1 — Short Stories

This unit is organized into two sections:

  • Section 1:  Short Story Analysis
  • Section 2:  Novel Study
In this section, you will develop  the following skills:

  • Self-Reflection —Examine your previous work in the course to determine your strengths and weaknesses and then plan for ways to apply what you have discovered to future work.

  • Reading Literacy—Study a written text and examine what key ideas the text creator is communicating and the tools being used to communicate those key ideas.

  • Evaluating Context —Learn how factors in someone’s environment can affect the way a text is created and how factors in someone’s environment help us understand a person’s words and actions.

  • Writing Literacy—Apply the writing skills you practised in Unit 1, and learn additional strategies such as
    • how to incorporate evidence into your writing
    • how to make your writing flow (sentence fluency)
    • how to write effectively about the literature you are reading
  • Diploma Exam Preparation—Learn how to succeed on the Literary Exploration section of your provincial diploma exam.
