The Pleasure of Reading

In an era of multimedia, social media, and 24-hour Internet access, many
of us spend our free time cruising the web—clicking on links, tweeting
our thoughts, and Instagraming our experiences. We may not have time . .
. or . . . make time to sit in a quiet corner to read stories. We may
not always see the allure of reading stories for enjoyment, particularly
if reading means looking at a static page of words with nowhere to
click and nothing to watch.
Reading stories, though, has the unique ability to allow us to crawl inside another world and imagine the lives within it. Unlike with movies, photographs, or videos, no one is manipulating what we see or how we feel when we read. Instead, when we read, for a few minutes or a few hours, we just allow the words on the page to transport our imaginations and give us a break from our own lives for a while.
In this section of the unit, you will closely study four very different short stories that will transport you to four very different worlds. In the process of studying these stories, you will further explore the essential questions in the course and learn key concepts related to the genre.
