Sentence Fluency

Whether it’s fair or not, we are all judged by the way we communicate.  If someone uses slang or curse words in a job interview, the interviewer will likely assume the job candidate does not know how to behave properly in a work environment, and likely won’t hire the person for the position.  If someone submits a resume full of spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors, he or she is not likely to be hired either, as the person hiring will probably assume the candidate lacks either the education or the attention to detail needed to do the job well.

One very small change you can make to your writing that can have a significant impact upon the way others view it is to improve your sentence fluency.  Sentence fluency is the rhythm and flow of writing.  If your writing has sentence fluency, it is easy to read and understand, as one sentence flows gracefully into the next.  Writing that lacks sentence fluency feels choppy.  When you try to read choppy writing aloud, you will find yourself stumbling over the sentences, and you may discover that it is difficult to follow what the writer is saying.

You can improve sentence fluency in three ways:

  • varying sentence lengths
  • varying sentence beginnings
  • using transition words or phrases between ideas
