Diploma Exam Preparation-Literary Exploration

  Learn

The third type of assignment you will be given on the written portion of your diploma exam is called a Literary Exploration. On the diploma exam, this task is worth 25% of the total exam mark.  Your response is scored based on four categories:  Thought and Support (10%),  Form and Structure (5%), Matters of Choice (5%), and Matters of Correctness (5%)

What to Expect:

  • A text, or an excerpt of a text, will be provided on the exam to help you think about the topic to which you will respond.

  • This text may be a poem, a short story, or an excerpt from a play or novel.

  • The text given to you on the exam will not be one you have studied in the course.
Your task is to discuss the topic given to you in the exam question, using a character from a text you have studied in the course, and (if you choose) the text provided on the exam.

The Rules:

  • You must discuss literature you have studied in the course. (This instruction is very important!)

  • You are encouraged to refer to your personal experience and/or the text provided in the exam, but you are not required to refer to either.

  • You must respond in prose (not poetry), and essay format is recommended.  Aim for five to six paragraphs (an introduction, three to four body paragraphs, and a conclusion).

  • Your response must be well supported and well organized.
