The Selfie
In 2012, the concept of taking a “selfie” exploded in popularity. That’s the year Time magazine listed “selfie” on its list of the
top ten “buzzwords” of that year. The Internet phenomenon of the selfie grew exponentially with the popularity of social media (such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) and the stratospheric growth of cell-phone usage among teens and pre-teens.
People take selfies and share them for a variety of reasons: to connect with others, to seek approval, or to communicate an emotion to the outside world.
However, even though selfies are pictures of ourselves taken by ourselves, they don’t necessarily portray who we really are. Rather, they portray us as we want people to see us.
