Actively Viewing a Film

Remember, analyzing a film critically requires you to become an active viewer.  As an active viewer, you are not only aware of your feelings while you watch the film, but you also think about how the director’s decisions drew those feelings from you.

Throughout this unit, you will watch different instructional videos and film clips to help you develop a deeper understanding of film study.  In the Note It section, you will see a few short questions to focus on during your viewing of each video.  You can choose how best to record your responses to these questions.  They are not submitted for marks.  Make notes that will help you review in the future.

Brad Smilanich has been a teacher serving students in Alberta’s schools for almost 20 years.  He is passionate about film and visual literacy. (He is also secretly obsessed with cardigan sweaters.  Watch the videos.  You’ll see.)  Brad has shared four videos that will support your understanding of film study.

While you view Brad’s Introduction to Film video, consider . . .

  • Why is it important to watch a movie and specific scenes, more than once, when actively viewing a film?

  • What role do cinematic techniques play in the effectiveness of a film?
