The Language of Cinematic Techniques

Just as you learn key vocabulary to help you talk about novels, short stories, poetry, and visual texts, there is key vocabulary you will use to discuss a film critically.

As Brad mentioned in his Introduction to Film video, you are probably already aware that cinematic techniques exist.

In this unit, you will learn the language of cinematic techniques, so you can discuss their effectiveness in the films you will study.

There are six main topics for you to learn:

  1. movement in film
  2. transitions in film
  3. types of shots
  4. framing of shots
  5. sound
  6. lighting
It is essential that you become more familiar with the language of cinematic techniques.  You will use these key terms throughout the entire unit.  As you become more comfortable with recognizing cinematic techniques, you will deepen your appreciation of how those techniques contribute to the overall impact of the films you view.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Next, you will be introduced to each type of cinematic technique.  You will be provided with examples of a few techniques and will view either images or short video clips to support your understanding.  From there, you will review the Elements of Film video that will teach you about the other key techniques you need to know.

You will collect your observations in your Elements of Film Handout (in Word, Google doc, or PDF format). Think of this handout like a bingo card.  As you learn the content, fill in the spaces on the handout.  At the end, you’ll have a handy set of notes to help you answer quiz questions and complete your assignments.

At the end of this section, you will complete a multiple-choice quiz in which you will apply what you have learned.  You may use your Elements of Film Handout to answer the quiz questions.
