Additive vs. Transformational Change
As you learned in Unit 2, dynamic characters undergo a significant change during the course of the story. This transformation can be either additive or transformational change.

Additive change means that a character begins at a certain point and improves. For example, a character might improve his or her skills as an athlete throughout the course of the film, or a character’s financial status might improve as he or she gains more wealth.
Transformational change means a character undergoes a significant and permanent change, often in terms of how he or she views the world. In many films, the character’s life changes significantly for the better, giving the audience hope. You may also find that a character’s quality of life or view of the world has changed in a negative sense, leaving the character angry or jaded because of what has happened in the film. You may consider comparing this type of character to one who changed for the better, when you reflect on the film.
