Strategies for Effective Oral Presentations

As part of your next assignment, youโ€™ll be submitting your first oral presentation.  Oral presentations can be intimidating for many students.  However, you do not have to deliver your oral presentation live to your teacher.

You may . . .

  • leave a telephone voicemail for your marker
OR
  • record your presentation and upload it directly on the assignment page.

Follow these steps to lessen any anxiety about public speaking:

Plan ahead.

  • Write down key points of your presentation, in order.

  • Avoid writing down your presentation word-for-word, which likely will lead to a less natural-sounding speaking style.

Practise out loud.

  • Practise speaking your presentation somewhere you wonโ€™t feel self-conscious.

  • Practise everything you plan to sayโ€”even your introduction of yourself and your name as well as your conclusion in which you thank the audience for the opportunity to present your opinion on the important issue.

  • If possible, record yourself talking so you can play it back.

  • Make an effort to sound polished, professional, friendly, and confident.

  • If you arenโ€™t sure how to pronounce a word, go online.  Most online dictionaries have an audio feature with word pronunciations.
