Film Reviews: Writing for a Purpose
TO PERSUADE
Many film reviewers hope to build a following of readers who value their opinion. As such, film reviewers use persuasive techniques to convince readers of their opinion of the film. They will support those opinions with specific details from the film, perhaps even including quotations from the film, to build the reviewer’s credibility with the audience.
TO ENGAGE
Film reviewers must also keep their readers’ interest. For example, they might use sarcasm or humour to keep their readers engaged. They may use rhetorical questions that the audience can answer for themselves while they read the review. In all cases, reviewers choose their words carefully to ensure their voice comes across loud and clear!
