Brian Aldiss is a British author who has published many short stories but is best known for his science fiction.

The story “Supertoys Last All Summer Long” inspired Stephen Spielberg’s science fiction film A.I.

This futuristic story switches back and forth between two different scenes.  The first scene is in the home of the Swintons.   Here, we peer inside the world of David Swinton, a sad little boy, and his mother, Monica Swinton.  In the other scene, we follow Henry Swinton, David’s father, as he prepares to make an important speech to Synthank, the company where he serves as managing director.  As the story progresses, we learn more and more about the rather unusual lives of the Swintons.  We also discover the strange and disturbing reason for David’s sadness and the equally disturbing reason for his parents’ growing happiness.
