Language Arts 6 Course Overview
Completion requirements
Welcome to Grade 6 Language Arts!
In this course, you will read, view, discuss, and write about a variety of interesting topics.
Six units are devoted to fairness, studying images, discovering the wonders of space, thinking about favourites in arts and entertainment, reading stories, and the exploration of our country, Canada.
As a student studying Language Arts through distance learning, you will work independently much of the time. However, you may contact your teacher when you have a question or need help with an assignment. You also have opportunities to make comments on other students’ opinions and receive feedback on your own in Forum postings and blogs.

Targets/Expectations
The targets and expectations for Language Arts 6 are established by Alberta Education and described in detail in the Program of Studies for English Language Arts.

Private Files
- Students are expected to store their work on their personal computer, which they can access anytime regardless of any technology outages. However, they may store their course work in “Private Files” to share with their teacher before submitting for a grade.

Course Instruction
Instruction in every unit is arranged to help you know what you are going to learn and why that is important in daily life. You can explore one topic in several selections to see how different reactions can have different results. Icons, or little pictures, will help you recognize a specific kind of task or activity throughout the course.
Learning Goals
Learning Goals are your targets for learning about reading, writing, and other forms of literacy. Learning Goals are clearly stated at the beginning of each unit and reviewed at the end of the unit.
All the Units in Language Arts 6 will have Essential Questions to guide your work.
An Essential Question appears at the top of every page in each unit. These questions will get you thinking and every lesson will help you work to answer the question. As well, learning goals and questions to answer will be a part of your work. As you work through the lessons, you will often stop and reflect on the Essential Question and the goals of the unit.
When you finish the unit, you will review the work you completed and reflect on your progress

Every unit will have the following:
- your Reader's Notebook worksheets and assignments to be handed in to your teacher via submission pages (These are for marks.)
- online charts and organizers to keep things organized
- Vocabulary Word Wall for new words, sentences, definitions, and images (These are not for marks except for the novel study words in Unit 5.)
- a variety of digital tools for finding information and completing assignments
- self-assessments which are not to be handed in to your teacher
