Unit 1

How Am I Influenced by Images?

Lesson 3

Reader's Notebook

Who's the Audience?

Anywhere the eye can see in a city, there is likely an advertisement. How do advertisers send messages to viewers?

Different images are used to appeal to different groups of people.

Click each coloured row for information about images.

Colour is one way that images appeal to certain viewers.

Some colours make viewers feel cheerful and excited like red, yellow, and orange.

Other colours like blue and green make viewers feel calm and relaxed.

Some colours may make the viewer feel serious such as gray, brown, or black.

A colour such as white can make the viewer feel good or clean.
Another way images appeal to groups of people is to use the composition of the image effectively. The viewers may ask why this arrangement?

Images are arranged in three parts

  • foreground (front of the image)
  • mid ground (middle of the image)
  • background (back of the image)

Look at the blizzard image on p. 65 of your textbook. The large blue spotlight and the man in red are in the foreground; the girl in the snow is in the mid ground; the man in black with the large snow maker and white screen are in the background.
Once you have considered who the audience of the image might be, or elements of background and foreground, you can ask a more challenging question: who is not in the image?

For example, in the image on p. 64, the two snow makers are not included in the frame. Why has the photographer chosen to exclude the two men? The image of the girl in the snowstorm seems more realistic because key details are missing.
