Unit 2

How Can Someone Make a Difference?

Order By Number

Five little monkeys jumping on a bed; one fell off and broke his head…
…is a familiar nursery chant.

This rhyme organizes information using numbers. One can organize events in a paragraph by number (1, 2, 3, 4…).

Order By Time

Narrative paragraphs are also organized by time. A writer tells a story by starting at the beginning of an event, and telling the important events that happen until the end of the event. Therefore, narrative paragraphs contain dates and time. Signal words for chronological order include:

  • the following morning
  • when she was twelve
  • that Wednesday
  • before the sun rose
  • a few hours later
  • that April
