What Does It Mean to Explore?
Lesson 1
Poetry: What's in a Name?
Hailey, Ariel, Lyra, Phoenix, Leo, Perseus, Jericho, Hunter. What do these names have in common?
These are both human names and also name specific space items such as Haileyβs comet or the Phoenix constellation.
Parents are very careful in choosing names for their babies. Because the name represents a person, the name needs to be precisely right. Similarly, in poetry, words need to be precisely right because words express the poetβs ideas and feelings. A poet tries to use as few words as possible to convey meaning.
In poetry
- Words must sound pleasing to the ear
- Words must be specific and meaningful
- Words must form concrete images
