Critical Viewing

Critical viewers often use the photographs to gain additional information.

As they look at a photograph, they let their eyes move over the photograph and ask What does the photograph want me to notice or learn?

Critical viewers ask themselves the following questions:

  • What is the focal point? Where are my eyes drawn first?
  • How do people's faces add meaning?
  • How does seeing this help me add meaning?
  • What additional information can I learn from this photograph about life in space?

Read the selection Ask an Astronaut from pages 152 to 156 of Literacy in Action.

As you read,

  • pause and check for understanding after each question/answer
  • analyze photographs for additional information
  • look for connections between the photographs and the text
