Activity

Writing Your Explanation

Write your focus statement, topic sentences, body sentences, and a closing sentence. After you have written the first draft, revise.

Revise Your Writing

Think about the following questions as you revise your writing.

  • Does my focus statement provide direction for my explanation?
  • Are my topic sentences clear?
  • What details should I add or remove?
  • Are my categories and details organized in the best way?
  • Do I sound knowledgeable about my topic?
  • Are my words clear and precise?
  • Do my sentences flow smoothly?
  • Have I included a thoughtful closing?

Edit for Conventions

After you revise your work, check it for conventions.

Answer the questions below.

• Did I use correct punctuation and capitalization?
• Have I checked my spelling and grammar?

Peer Edit

Ask a parent or friend to edit your explanation before you hand it in. The feedback checklist will help you reach your goal of writing an excellent explanation.

After making a good copy of your explanation, check it one more time for errors. Hand it in to your teacher. Your explanation must include the following:
  • title
  • headings: three main ideas
  • supporting details
  • features
  • resources used for your research

Checklist

When you have completed the Explanation, have a peer or family member review your work using the 3-5 Peer Edit Feedback Checklist.

They will review your explanation by reading through each question on the checklist and checking to see if you met all requirements.
