Your assignment is to write a short opinion essay to help other Grade 6 students become informed and knowledgeable about one of the following subjects. 

Choose from the following as a subject for your opinion piece:

  • Should individuals be monitored in how they express themselves online?
  • Should celebrities expect a level of privacy or should their lives be open to everyone? 
  • Should video games be seen as a sport or way to keep fit?
  • Should junk food be available in school?
  • Should art and music be mandatory subjects in school?
  • Other?

Development of Ideas


Read Ideas in Opinion Writing on page 17 of Literacy in Action 6B.

One of the most important aspects of opinion writing is the development of ideas.

Writers must do the following:

  • state a clear opinion
  • provide reasons, facts, statistics, examples or details from personal experience to support the opinion

Now, you will plan an opinion article.

The first step is to decide what you are going to write about. Choose one of the topics above.


When you have the topic chosen, go to the next step of the activity to Plan Your Opinion Article.

Now that your topic is chosen, you can plan your opinion article.

How to save a file:


  1. Have the file open and select Save As from the File menu.
  2. Name your Persuasion Map Practice Page file in this format: jsmith_persuasionpractice and save the file to your Documents folder.

After you have completed the Persuasion Map in Section 2 Assignment 4-4, go to the next step of the activity to complete the Persuasion Map Organizer.


When you are ready to write your Opinion Article, use the website Persuasion Map Organizer.






Save

  2. Name your Assignment 4-4 file in this format: jsmithla6_4-4-opinion and save the file to your Documents folder to use later.

Now that your plan is complete, you will have the opportunity to work on this topic later.
