Unit 5

What Can We Learn from Realistic Fiction?

Activity

Developing the Main Character of Your Own Realistic Story

Develop the backstory of a character from the picture on pp. 96-97 of Literacy in Action 6B.

Open Your File

Develop your own character from the story photo on pp. 96-97.

Open your file Assignment 5-7 and complete it.

You previously saved this file in this format: jsmithla6_5-7-character-assignment in your Documents folder.

Now, think about the character who will be the narrator in your story.

Creating a back story (what happened to the character in the past that is not part of the current story) helps to develop the character's personality and "voice".

A writerโ€™s voice or sound includes his or her dialogue: sentence structure, word choice, punctuation, and speech patterns. If you ever said something like โ€œIf Shane was here now, heโ€™d say, โ€˜I gots to get me some grits!โ€™ โ€, you were referring to Shaneโ€™s โ€œvoiceโ€.

Complete the Character Chart on Section 2 of your downloaded Assignment 5-7 worksheet to develop the backstory of your character.
