Prefixes and Suffixes: A Useful Reading Strategy

Dividing a word into β€œChunks”, (prefix – root – suffix) will help you to understand words you’ve never seen before.

  • Adding the meaning of the prefix to the meaning of the root word will help you understand an unfamiliar word.
  • Sometimes suffixes are added to root words to make them fit appropriately into a sentence. Adding the meaning of the suffix to the meaning of the root word will help you understand an unfamiliar word and its role in a sentence.

 Story Recount Video

Being able to recount or retell a story is a useful skill in being able to better understand a story. Learn more about retelling a story by viewing this Youtube video: Retelling a story.

Drag the root words to the box first. Then try the prefixes or suffixes one at a time. Each time, read the word you made. Is it a real word? Sometimes you can tell if you try to use it in a sentence.
