Prefixes and Suffixes: A Useful Reading Strategy
Dividing a word into “Chunks”, (prefix – root – suffix) will help you to understand words you’ve never seen before.
- Adding the meaning of the prefix to the meaning of the root word will help you understand an unfamiliar word.
- Sometimes suffixes are added to root words to make them fit appropriately into a sentence. Adding the meaning of the suffix to the meaning of the root word will help you understand an unfamiliar word and its role in a sentence.
