Unit 1

What is Courage?

Compound Words

Compound words are made by joining two small words together to make one new word

For example, butterfly is made by joining two small words together; butter and fly.

A word that has two parts, but the parts are not words by themselves is not a compound word. For example: heavy – the word has two parts (2 syllables – hea and vy), but hea and vy are not words by themselves. The two parts that make the sounds of the word heavy are called syllables.
