Creating a Poem
Your assignment today is to write a Theme Poem β a poem that deals with a specific theme or idea.
As in all poetry, word choice is important in a theme poem, as the words help create an image or feeling.

Kinds of Poetry
The poems you read in this lesson are called Blank or Free Verse poems.They do not follow a rhythmic pattern or rhyme.
A theme poem is often the same β you do not have to create rhymes in a theme poem.
Creating a Poem
You will create your poem on this site: Theme Poem.
- Choose the theme, idea, or topic that you know the most about.
- This will make it easier for you to come up with words to use in your poem.
- Think of some descriptive action words β or other words that fit your theme β before you start. That will help you when you are asked to make a word list in the program.
- Use the word list to help get you started on lines for the poem.
- Remember that your poem does not have to rhyme.

- Remember to make effective word choices to make your poem the best it can be.
- Read the Rubric before you write the poem, so you know what is expected of you.
- Send the poem to your teacher by clicking on βShare Finalβ on the last page of the software. It will allow you to e-mail the poem to your teacher.
