Unit 2

Get The Message!

Layout

You can get a better idea of the importance of layout by trying to find the message in a poster.

The antique poster to the right is an advertisement used by a shipping line company to get people to book with them.

  • Poster advertisements often use large text, such as “CUNARD LINE - NEW_YORK LIVERPOOL” to catch your attention and then smaller text, such as “Sailing 4 Times a Week”, to explain details.
  • A colourful image of the steamer ship in the centre of the poster draws the reader's attention.
  • Layout directs your eyes and guides you to the most important information on the poster: in this case, the designer wants you to book a trip across the Atlantic Ocean.

Read

For assignments in this lesson, you will analyze three different posters on pages 64 to 69 in Literacy in Action 4A. You will analyze the layout in each poster to determine the designer's message.
