Synonyms: Words with Similar Meaning


Sometimes when reading, you may not recognize a word or know its meaning. 
Writers use synonyms, words with similar meanings, to help readers understand ideas without repeating the same word. 
For example, the author of Tricky Pics used the words altered, manipulated, and adjusted, which all mean "changed".

Synonym Words

When you encounter an unfamiliar word, you can find its meaning and several synonyms in a print or online dictionary.


For example, dictionaries include the definition of the word, and often several synonyms.
For example the word: abandon:  "to leave behind with no plan to return, or to desert". Some synonyms of abandon, or words with a similar meaning, are “desert”, “forsake”, and “turn one’s back on”.  
You may also use a Thesuarus to find a list of synonyms.

You may include other unfamiliar words and their synonyms in your document as well.

Save

How to save a file for submission:

  1. Have the file open and select Save As from the File menu.
  2. Select your Documents folder as the location to Save In.
  3. Name the document. You will always name your documents in a similar way.
      • Use the first letter of your first name, followed by your last name, then an underscore (_), then the name of the file.
      • In this case, the file name is Reader's Notebook: Tricky Pictures. For example, if my name is John Smith, I would name my file jsmith_trickypictures.

  4. Click Save. Your chart is in your Documents folder.
