Activities

In this section, you will complete the following activities:

  • review answers to the question from other classmates
  • learn new Word Wall Words

Now, read the question in the green textbox on page 77 of Literacy in Action 4A under "View Like a Photographer".

The Question Is

How do the photographs help readers understand the information about tricky pics?

The Answer Is

Readers use their background knowledge about a topic to determine if something is possible. However, if the topic is not familiar, they can examine features such as out-of-scale images, fuzzy outlines, changes in lighting, repeating patterns, and weird shadows to see if a photograph has been altered.

You can look at the pictures of cats and dogs watching a 3-D movie and know immediately that this is not a real picture.

Background Knowledge

  • cats and dogs do not sit in chairs (At least, they do not sit upright in theatre chairs!)
  • cats and dogs do not like glasses on their face (Most do not like this!)
  • cats and dogs cannot pick up popcorn with their paws

Techniques Used to Alter the Photograph

  • Out-of-Scale Images: cats and dogs are not the same size as theatre chairs
  • Fuzzy Outlines: Orange cat in front has a line between its ears and forehead suggesting two pictures were pasted together
  • Changes in Lighting: the lighting fades toward the back of the picture
