From Cave to Computer

Turn to pages 86 to 89 of Literacy in Action 4A and review the selection From Cave to Computer. Notice how the author has set up the timeline.


The timeline runs from top to bottom on each page. Dates of events are listed on the left-hand side of the page with a line break. On the right-hand side of the page is a picture with a title of the type of message and an explanation about how the message was delivered during that time period.

  • Read the selection, paying close attention to the way delivery of messages has changed throughout time.
  • The question in the View like a Designer textbox on page 87 of Literacy in Action 4A asks how visuals help you understand information in the timeline.
  • Visuals help you make connections to what you read. When you see the pictures, you may be able to relate them to something that you saw or read about previously.
  • Your parents or grandparents may have some items pictured in this selection in their home.
